A study published this month in the journal Pediatrics suggests the U.S. is making progress against a cancer-causing virus most people carry at some point in their lives — human papillomavirus, or HPV.
About 90 percent of the population contracts HPV sooner or later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Most never experience any symptoms, and their infections disappear within a couple years without long-term effects. But in some men and women, the infection leads to cancer years later.
