Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews gave some succinct advice to his nephew Jenard Andrews on how his ensemble, the New Breed Brass Band, which on Saturday will headline the second annual Capital City Jazz & Food Truck Festival in downtown Topeka, needed to distinguish itself from all of New Orleans’ other brass bands.
“You won’t get too far doing what everybody else is doing,” Jenard Andrews, New Breed’s co-founder and snare drummer, recalled his uncle saying. “Y’all got to find y’all.”
