In 2002, the famously dry-witted U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts stood before a gathering of Kansas Republicans and deadpanned that he was only invited because pop stars were unavailable.
“Actually,” he said, “both Jerry Moran and I received invitations, but he couldn’t decide.”
Like most good jokes, it contained more than a modicum of truth. Moran, then a third-term congressman from the expansive 1st District, had already etched out a reputation for dubiety.
