A man convicted of raping and murdering a college student nearly two decades ago should get a new sentence because the jury was prejudiced after the victim’s father attacked him, and because he had a mental illness, the man’s attorney argued Monday.
Gary Kleypas, now 60, was convicted of killing Pittsburg State University student Carrie Williams, 20, in 1996. He was sentenced to death, but the Kansas Supreme Court overturned the sentence in 2001. A second jury sentenced him to death again in 2008.
