ABILENE – A large tornado ripped across the countryside Wednesday evening, threatening to lash towns but ultimately focusing its fury onto a long, narrow tract of land where it battered homes and property.
The twister damaged at least 20 homes, but the authorities reported no deaths and no confirmed injuries. The tornado swept north of Abilene, heading east during the 7 p.m. hour toward Chapman, where it came close to biting the city’s southern end.
