Much of central northeast Kansas, including Shawnee County, is under a tornado watch until 11 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Thunderstorms are developing south of Interstate 70, near Hays, and expected to move northeast, a meteorologist with the NWS said around 3:20 p.m. Tornados could be produced in the area from about 6 to 8 p.m.
Winds Sunday afternoon in the Topeka area have been sustained at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
