The number of members worshipping in Oakland Christian Church’s sanctuary was down to no more than 30 people each Sunday, and that number “wasn’t enough to pay the bills” to keep the more than 100-year-old church open, said Ken Powell, former pastor.
The structure itself was in good shape, but members decided they wanted to “leave a legacy” and leave the building to a Christian-based organization, Powell said.
They decided to donate the church at 1001 N.E. Michigan to the Topeka Rescue Mission if it wanted the structure.
