Washburn Opera Studio mixes a little “Grease” into its production of Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera “L’Elisir d’Amore” (“The Elixir of Love”).
Instead of Donizetti’s original setting of a small village in the Basque Country at the end of the 18th century, Andrea Garritano, Washburn’s director of opera, sets romantic comedy in a 1950s diner, which is created with sparse staging in White Concert Hall for performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The plot of the oft-produced opera remains unchanged.
