Senator defends election bill against criticism from teachers union

A Johnson County lawmaker on Monday defended a proposal to require annual votes on the status of local teachers unions — an idea panned by the state’s main union as a distraction from more important matters.

Sen. Jeff Melcher, R-Leawood, said his bill has the potential to improve the quality of education in Kansas schools. It would require that annual votes be held on whether teachers want their local unions to continue representing them.
